Based on the current state of science and technology, the human aging process is a sad inevitability — unless, perhaps, one arranges to be cryogenically suspended (which does have the unfortunate side effect of making it much more difficult to be the life of the party). We do, however, live at a time in which the power to slow, reduce, and yes, even reverse the effects of aging does exist, and we are fortunate to have one of the best-equipped soldiers in the war against aging on the frontlines of our own Eastern Shore.

Since 2002, Dr. Jason Arrington of Atlantic Plastic Surgery has been plying his magical blend of art-science to the grateful residents of the Salisbury area and beyond. But even though the board-certified surgeon remains at the top of his field, he and his wife, Suzanne, know only too well that the campaign against the ravages of time’s inexorable march is best fought on multiple fronts. Anew MedSpa was the result.
October 2008 marks the one-year anniversary of the rejuvenative spa’s launch in Ocean City, Md., and the response has been, you might say, uplifting.

“The business has grown steadily since its opening,” said Arrington, “which is gratifying enough, but what really means the most to us is that it’s been because of referrals and word-of-mouth within the community.”

From the moment you enter the cleanly appointed waiting room with soothing wood accents, textured wall surfaces and soft lighting, you immediately begin to feel the serenity wash over you. A warm reception may also be relied upon always at Anew MedSpa, as well as the tender loving care of professionals like aesthetician Erica Age, nurse practitioner Lori Soley, spa manager Holly Conaway and Arrington himself as they accompany you through the process of cultivating a new — and renewed — you. It’s a formula that not only works, it appears to be doing so across the board.

Anew’s success can be attributed in part, to the excellent reputation and service demonstrated by the ladies at Atlantic Plastic Surgery’s Salisbury office. In addition to Arrington, the caring staff treat patients with warmth, and genuine concern for each individual… and their compassion is often rewarded!

“It’s not at all unusual to see things like Godiva chocolates and goodie bags being delivered to the Salisbury office by clients who want to express their appreciation for the quality care and kindness they’ve received,” declared Conaway, who joined the practice this year to help ensure that Anew MedSpa would maintain its same level of personal service despite an inflating client volume.

“What is also really gratifying,” Conaway continued, “is the diversity of our clients. Anew MedSpa works in very close conjunction with Atlantic Plastic Surgery, so we have clients from all walks of life — from teenagers to women in their 80s, including all races and ethnicities, in all shapes and sizes. We even have a female tow-truck driver! But the most interesting development for sure is the steady yet significant increase we’ve seen in our male clientele. We have cops, businessmen, professionals, blue-collar workers, you name it, who are coming in either for treatments or consultations about facials, microdermabrasion, eyelid work, liposuction, Botox, fillers and especially laser hair removal, which has really begun to take off in popularity.”

It’s probably fair to say that laser technology has practically revolutionized certain aspects of the skin-treatment industry. But not all lasers are created equal.

“When it comes to the efficacy and safety of laser treatment, it’s all in the technology,” advised Arrington.

“Generalist laser products may claim to do it all, but they do nothing well. Specialized laser equipment — such as that offered by Candela — is much more effective. That’s why consumers have to do their research before committing to a particular practitioner; they should know what treatment modality the practitioner uses, as well as his or her credentials to do this kind of work.

“If it’s for permanent hair removal, sun spots, age spots, facial veins, leg veins, vascular lesions, freckles, melasma, beard bumps, skin tightening or wrinkle reduction,” added Arrington, who holds medical degrees from the universities of Miami and Kentucky, “Candela’s GentleLASE and GentleYAG treatments can make a more profoundly positive difference — on all colors and types of skin — than any technique used previously.”
Another treatment growing in popularity lately is called Intense Pulsed Light. IPL restores the skin through a process known as Photorejuvenation, which safely reduces melanin-based pigmented lesions for a more luminous, youthful appearance.

But as a full-service rejuvenative facility, Anew MedSpa offers a wide array of treatment options, including Botox, Juvederm and Restylane injectibles for the treatment of wrinkles, folds and fine lines; Obagi treatment for both adult and adolescent acne; microdermabrasion; chemical peels; skin tightening and more. Consultations are free, and treatment costs tend to be much more affordable than most people realize.

“I wanted to augment my scope of patient care by creating a noninvasive complement to my surgical practice,” Arrington shared. “At the end of the day, I wanted to offer a rejuvenative solution to people of all types and backgrounds, regardless of their financial means. There are things all of us can do to look and feel better, and I am confident that my staff and I are better equipped to help people achieve that goal than anyone else in the region.”
