Delmarva Dental Services
Where High-Tech Dentistry Meets Eastern Shore Hospitality

Written by: EDUARDO GONZALEZ
“We treat each other and our patients like family.” As the holiday season comes to a close, Delmarva Dental Services reminds us to keep the spirit, goodwill and harmony alive all year long. Last year’s holiday season began as only as a reminder of a difficult year for an employee at Delmarva Dental Services. So emotionally overwhelmed were she and her family that even a simple Christmas tree was a distant thought. Unbeknownst to this woman, fellow employees banded together to buy and decorate a Christmas tree for her and her family.
Care and attention are only two of the sentiments patients will experience in Delmarva Dental Services. An experienced and innovative dental practice, Dental Delmarva Services strives for modernity in its facility, while fostering the old-school patient care that has made it a worthy example of Eastern Shore hospitality. Is it any wonder one patient, who lives in Indiana, makes the journey to Salisbury, Md., simply to keep a dental appointment? Or, that several clients in Baltimore make a similar journey? What is it that makes Dixie Brown, a current patient, describe her experience at Delmarva Dental Services as “amazing”? The answer is compassion, a kind-hearted staff and high-quality care.
Located at 1310 Belmont Ave., in Salisbury, Md., Delmarva Dental Services is a one-stop shop for everyone from toddlers to seniors, offering services from braces to implants, from crowns to cleanings, whatever your dental needs may be. A high-tech and innovative practice, Delmarva Dental Services exudes a palpable human dimension that fosters trust and comfort in anxious young and mature individuals. Entering the office, patients are greeted by soothing, vivid beach motifs of shells, starfish and dark blue walls. The experience is only made more enjoyable by the friendly smiles patients receive from the staff. An innovator since its inception, Delmarva Dental Services continues to stress the importance of high-quality technological and patient care.
The practice began in 1980, when Dr. Robert Esham, a Salisbury native, opened the practice in a small office on Riverside Drive. He then built an office on Civic Avenue later that year and remained there until moving into the present location in the fall of 2008. Since that time, Esham has been joined by Dr. Joseph Harmon, Dr. Raymond Makowske and Dr. Janet Cypher. Together, the four boast an impressive 33 years of college and post college education, in addition to a combined total of nearly 350 hours of continuing education each year. With experience like that, it is no wonder Delmarva Dental Services is a harbinger of things to come in the dental field.

Forget the long trip to Baltimore, Delmarva Dental Services offers the latest in dental care so you won’t have to leave the beauty and tranquility of the Lower Shore. In many ways, Delmarva Dental Services resembles a tranquil and serene place of relaxation rather than a traditional dental practice. Not surprisingly, Robert Shockley, another patient, stated, “Many people don’t go to the dentist, [because] they haven’t been here.” With a special thank you to Diane College, a business assistant, Delmarva Dental Services now offers imaging services that grant patients the opportunity to view the possibilities of restorative dental care. It is one of the few practices on the entire Eastern Shore to do so. What’s more, unlike dental visits of yesteryear, Delmarva Dental Services offers patients the opportunity to view what is being performed at that moment. And for those faint of heart, Delmarva Dental Services offers alternative options during procedures, including watching television or a favorite movie brought in to watch while receiving treatment.
During your first visit, you will receive a comprehensive exam and X-rays. It is a thorough exam and includes a lot of chatting about dentistry and what the patient likes and does not like about dentistry. Cast aside any notions of someone looking down their nose from up on high. Becky Hopkins, the office manager, assures patients their visit will be pleasant. She stated, “We want patients to enjoy their visits and tell others about the great care they received here.” Patients are encouraged to ask questions. If you are anxious, you may take comfort in knowing a staff member has been known to hold a patient’s hand when the need arose. Or, if pain is your main concern, Delmarva Dental Services prides itself on performing its procedures with as little discomfort as possible. In every case, the staff at Delmarva Dental Services strives to make each visit comfortable and relaxing.
