Celebrating the
“Best of the Eastern Shore”
Now in its 17th year, Metropolitan Magazine’s “Best Of The Eastern Shore After Business Party” has become as much a rite of passage on Delmarva as outdoor crab feasts and unpredictable weather. The annual gala, which will be held on Friday, September 30th at 5:30 p.m., honors the area’s best businesses at one of its top restaurants, Market Street Inn. The perennial favorite picked up several new awards this year, including nods for atmosphere, cocktails and business lunch.
This year the magazine honors many of the area businesses and individuals who provide the backbone of our local economy, from restaurants and bakeries, to automotive dealers and building contractors, as well as bartenders, real estate agents and electricians. What all the honorees undoubtedly have in common is that each one is essential in helping our community grow and thrive, and they all manage to do so despite the uncertain economic times we live in.
“The thing about all the businesses we’re doing this with — the winners — is that they’re all successful, and that’s a tricky thing to do these days,” explained Doug Naarup, publisher of The Metropolitan Magazine. “They’re voted ‘Best’ for a reason. It’s a fun party, and we feel good about it because it’s an honest ballot election and we go through a lot of trouble to count the ballots. But mainly, I feel good about it because it’s a positive promotion for the Eastern Shore.”
For the second consecutive year, ticket prices have been lowered to just $65 in an attempt to make the event as accessible as possible to members of the local community. All proceeds from the event will go to area non-profit “Women Supporting Women,” an organization which has become a vital and unparalleled community resource aiding those affected by breast cancer. The group was founded in 1993 by Harriette Fine, Carol Prager and Sue Revelle.
“Women Supporting Women’s mission is to provide awareness, education, and support to all those who are affected by breast cancer on Delmarva,” Revelle summatized. “The need for our services is growing during these challenging financial times and since we are supported by the community, funding is essential for us. Volunteers are also invaluable to our organization and we can always use them in our offices and at our events. They can also sew items for our educational totes and knit or quilt lap blankets for those going through chemotherapy.”

“… the event is open to the public.”

– Carol Naarup

Several of the unique services offered by Women Supporting Women include educational totes for the newly diagnosed, individualized mentoring, monthly newsletter and support meetings, and wigs for cancer patients.
“We have a lot of great programs on the drawing board for nutrition, exercise and complimentary care for the upcoming year,” Revelle added. “We are here for you because you are here for us.”
Also carrying over from last year is the relaxed dress code.
“It’s like a big block party, very casual,” suggests Metropolitan President Carol Naarup. “We did it last year and everybody loved it because they could just go from work to the party and meet the who’s who of the Eastern Shore, and meet old friends, enjoy great music, and great food. The food will, for sure, please everyone because [Market Street owner] Rob Mulford and his chef Joel Olive will be creating all these wonderful gourmet delights.”
Last year Classic Cakes provided dessert while Rise Up Coffee added flavored coffee drinks to go along with the sweets. This year the Cupcake Cafe will be getting in on the act as well.
Entertainment will be provided by three great live bands with Pennsylvania R&B group The Philly George Project rocking out under the 5,000-square-foot tent along the Wicomico River outside, and Tom and Donna Clark relaxing on the deck with their Caribbean steel drum band. The inside bar will feature the popular duo, Alex and Shiloh.
“One thing we want to change this year is the fact that a lot of people don’t realize that the event is open to the public,” Carol acknowledged. “That’s an important thing we want to get out because some people think it’s just for the winners. The entire event is just a great way to meet some of the best of the Eastern Shore while helping out a wonderful local cause and partying at the same time. And it’s such a good deal! At $65 you get gourmet food, you get two hours of open bar with wine and beer and some really creative mixed martinis that Rob creates, and there’s great music, so there’s something for everyone!
“It’s also really the only venue that we know of in the area that has a 5,000-square-foot tent along the river connected to the restaurant. It’s very unique and creates a fun, relaxed atmosphere where everybody is comfortable.”
